This teaser description on Kade P. Cole's F. Paul Wilson site accurately captures the book's premise: "The message is received from a Nazi commander stationed in a remote castle high in the Transylvanian alps: Something is murdering my men. Immediately an SS extermination squad is sent to destroy whatever enemy dares challenge the might of the Third Reich. And the battle is joined. A battle more awesomely terrifying than anything ever experienced. Between the ultimate evil created by man ... and the unthinkable, undreamed of, undead horror, it had awakened from centuries of darkness to suck the life from living souls again."
The Keep is the first entry in what Wilson calls "The Adversary" series of stories. One of Wilson's recurring characters is Repairman Jack, and on the Repairman Jack site appears an organizational chart, if you will, that depicts the links among Wilson's many novels, including those in The Adversary cycle.
Despite the talk about a series or cycle, The Keep is definitely a stand-alone novel that pulp fans will enjoy. Filled with Nazis led by a murderous SS commander, a mysterious and ages-old castle located in the Carpathians (those mountains in which Bram Stoker situated Dracula), a Jewish professor of folklore and his daughter, and a strange and seemingly amoral character named Glenn who may or may not be a hero -- there's plenty of action here. Wilson sets a marvelous pace in a very readable style from the first page that captures the reader's attention and holds it through the final page.
