If you've ever read a pulp story and thought that its style reminded you of another author's writing, you may have later discovered that the two writers were actually the same person. Prolific writers like Frederick Faust, H. Bedford-Jones, and Hugh Cave had multiple pseudonyms, and they weren't alone in that practice. And there were numerous writers who worked under house names owned by the publishing companies.
Pat Hawk has done pulp readers, collectors -- and those others of us who call ourselves "accumulators" -- a great service by compiling books that clear up some of the mysteries surrounding these author names. The Pulp Rack has invited Pat to share some info about these works, and I'm very happy to present it here. Pat doesn't have a website, but contact information appears at the end of this essay. Take it away, Pat:
HAWK'S REFERENCE BOOKS
As an avid reader and book collector, I discovered that most libraries and even many of the book dealers I dealt with did not have adequate resources to answer all my questions. So, I started to accumulate the results of my research and author interviews. Several reference librarians and book dealers became aware of the information I was gathering, and they encouraged me to organize and publish in book form. Most also volunteered to help where they could. In 1992, we published our first edition of Hawk's Authors' Pseudonyms for Book Collectors, which attributed more than 17, 000 pseudonyms.
The publication of that book created considerable interest from both users and authors alike. Other bibliophiles provided the results of their efforts, quickly expanding the knowledge available. Authors provided input to both grow the data and improve the accuracy. Two examples: When I wanted to verify the information I had on the pseudonyms of Dean R. Koontz and Robert Silverberg, I wrote the authors, sending the information I had and asking for their confirmation. Both responded, providing the necessary corrections and additions. I have continued to follow the practice of contacting authors whenever possible. What better source than the author? In response to user requests, we have added details: author nationality, life-span data, and more information on the material produced under each by-line.
Along the way, the need for information on series or sequel books became evident. Few references on this topic existed and almost none was current. The bibliophile and author networking that was already established once again became an essential resource. We only publish reference books that provide valuable, hard-to-come-by information, and we present it in an easy-to-use format. We continually update our data files, and readily respond to inquiries. Libraries, book dealers, book collectors and genre fans will all find our reference books to be invaluable resources.
