Your Favorite Cover

Let us know about your favorite pulp (or pulp reprint) cover. What is it that you like about it? What makes it stand out from the rest of the crowd on the newsstand? Or, who is your favorite pulp artist? What makes him or her great? And if you have scads of favorites, simply pick out one illustration by a particular artist and tell us what makes it appeal to you.

Here's a scan of the cover that Jim Griffin mentions in his comment: Famous Western Oct. 1952.

My favorite pulp cover is the one on the October 1952 Famous Western. The same illustration also appeared on a later Action Western. This cover is my favorite for a very personal reason. The horse and cowboy in the cover illustration bear an uncanny resemblance to my horse, Yankee, and myself. Now, since I was only 3 years old in 1952, and Yankee wasn't even a gleam in his granddam's eyes, we weren't the models.

This Oct 1952 Famous Western which you admire was painted by Alex Leslie Ross. He painted hundreds of nice pulp magazine covers fron 1936 until 1958. Most are unsigned but some have the painted signature "A.L.R" or just a bold "R". Ocassionally an original painting by A. L. Ross will be auctioned at the ILUSTRATION HOUSE art gallery in NYC for the range of $800 - $1,500 so you might someday be able to buy this actual artwork. Best wishes, David Saunders.
