CELLULOID PULP:
Max Brand's and Tom Mix's Alcatraz
By Duane Spurlock
I became interested in translations of Max Brand's stories to film after purchasing a VHS tape at a local flea market last autumn. I purchased a tape that included two Tom Mix silent westerns: Just Tony and Sky High! I'd never seen a Tom Mix movie before, and I thought it was time to mend that gap in my pop culture knowledge. I liked the dynamic line art illustrating the package, and these two movies were the oldest the dealer had on hand (Just Tony: 1922; Sky High!: 1922).
While watching, I noticed that the credits for Just Tony attributed Max Brand's novel Alcatraze (sic) as the basis for the film. So I thought a comparison was in order.

Hi Duane:
Having sort of easy access to THE COUNTRY
GENTLEMAN, I figured I'd do you a small favor
and get some of the missing details on Max Brand's
story "Alcatraz". So here's what I've come up with:
Alcatraz, by Max Brand. Illus. by John S. Curry.
Jun. 17, 1922 p. 9-11 Chaps. I-IV
Jun. 24, 1922 P. 8-9, 16 Chaps. V-VIII
Jul. 1, 1922 p. 8-9, 14 Chaps. IX-XIV
Jul. 8, 1922 p. 8-9, 14 Chaps. XV-XIX
Ju. 15, 1922 P. 12, 14, 25, 26 Chaps. XX-XXIV
Also, this was the second feature film in which
Tony and Tom Mix appeared together. The first was
For Big Stakes, also produced by Fox (released
June 18, 1922) a couple of months before Alcatraz
(released Aug. 20, 1922).
Best,
Victor
