"Escape"
Larry Estep's PulpGen site has an e-text of this Georges Surdez story available for download. It appeared in the March 1937 issue of The Popular. As Larry's note says, "Although this title was published by Street & Smith, it is not a continuation of The Popular Magazine. In fact, it wasn't really even a pulp. It was actually more of a digest and was the successor to Hard Boiled. This is the story of a couple of escaped convicts, one of whom is on a personal mission." Click here to see the story.
Prehistoric Fiction
An e-text version of Surdez’s translation of J.H. Rosney Aine‘s novel, Helgvor of the Blue River –- which was serialized in ARGOSY -- appears on the Prehistoric Fiction web site. It’s a pretty interesting site for pulp fans, as Edgar Rice Burroughs, among others, gets some mention there. Click here for the site. Click here for the e-text of the novel.
“Russian Roulette”
A short story by that title, written by Georges Surdez, in the January 30, 1937, issue of Collier's magazine gets mentioned on The Straight Dope web site. The article claims that Surdez’s story is the earliest known reference to this lethal practice of gunplay as “Russian roulette.” Click here to visit the site and read the article, which includes a short passage from Surdez’s story. (The Take Our Word For It website also mentions Surdez’s story and discusses The Straight Dope’s discussion of the term. To see this essay, click here.)
