by Al Tonik
[Editor's note: pulp enthusiast and researcher Al Tonik generously agreed to share his listing of Emile C. Tepperman's work, which he originally published in PEAPS (the Pulp-Era Amateur Press Society). This listing nicely complements Victor Berch's essay on his attempts to track down the elusive fictioneer. Many thanks to Al for his willingness to share information on Tepperman!]
Not much is known about Emile C. Tepperman. At PULPCON we would ask the guests of honor if they knew Tepperman. They all said they knew him but could offer no other news.
In the letters column of the August 1939 issue of Writer's Digest, there is a letter from Emile C. Tepperman of Crompond, N.Y. He was complaining about a criticism of one of his stories, "Hot Snow," published in the March 1934 issue of Ten Detective Aces. He admits this was one of his first stories and has lots of flaws in it. He goes on to say that many pulp writers "are ever striving to write to the best of their ability, and that they do not compromise by taking the easiest way out."
Pulp publisher Henry Steeger, in a letter in pulp fanzine XENOPHILE #36, November 1977, wrote that Al Norton reminded him that Tepperman was small, had a dark complexion with dark hair, was probably of French or Latin origin and came to the office many times.
Nick Carr wrote an article on Emile Tepperman in the October 1979 issue of The Unicorn. Paul Bonner, Jr. looked in old Street & Smith files, and between 1939 and 1942, Tepperman's address was in the Queens section of New York City.
In Robert Turner's book, SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE WRITERS, BUT I WOULDN'T WANT MY DAUGHTER TO MARRY ONE published by Sherbourne in 1970, he said he was hired by Ace in 1940 to be an editor in their ACE Comics group. Harry Widmer and his staff would go to lunch, accompanied by some of his writers. "Sometimes Emile C. Tepperman, a top detective pulp writer of that time who later became a staff writer for radio's Gang Busters, would join us."
Arthur L. Burks had helped to form the American Fiction Guild to protect writer's rights. They used to meet every Friday for lunch. Steve Fisher said in Writer's Year Book 1941, he attended one of these gatherings, and Emile C. Tepperman was there.
Tepperman was one of three listed authors on the radio program Counterspy, a half-hour espionage adventure drama, from May 18, 1942 to November 29, 1957, created by Phillips H. Lord. This came from THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF OLD-TIME RADIO by John Dunning, published by Oxford University Press in 1998. Also, he was supposed to be one of the writers on the radio program Gang Busters, a half-hour show broadcast from July 29, 1935 to November 27, 1957, also created by Phillips H. Lord. Still another show, Inner Sanctum Mysteries, was on the air from January 7,1941 to October 5, 1952.
Then there is the article by Victor Berch in ECHOES for February 1985 called "The Tepperman Quest - Phase 2." He found Tepperman's address in 1943 was 4708 39th Avenue, Sunnyside, Long Island City, Queens. Then Victor saw a notice in 1966 for the copyright renewal of Tepperman's "The Man Who Couldn't Lose" from the September 1939 issue of Detective Tales Magazine. Unfortunately the copyright was for M-G-M, not Tepperman. Then Victor noted in the Catalog of Copyright Entries for 1946-7 a list of 19 scripts for the radio program Inner Sanctum, and he was still living at the same address in Long Island City. Victor contacted Himan Brown, the producer of Inner Sanctum. Brown replied, "Tepperman died in the late forties - I found him to be a skillful and inventive writer - He contributed to the success of my series - He was married - I spoke to his wife often - I seriously doubt if he did any writing for Phillips Lord - I knew Lord and doubt if Emile was the kind of writer he cottoned to - Emile was a quiet man, most reliable." Then Victor inquired of the Election Board. Emile and his wife, Gladys, lived in the house in Long Island City from 1937 to 1949 as tenants. At that time he was 50 years old and had lived in New York State for 50 years. The Teppermans had been evicted.
I just discovered an entry in the Locus Index to Science Fiction. It has the life span for Emile C. Tepperman as 1899 to 1951.
THE PULP WRITINGS OF EMILE TEPPERMAN
From (1) THE PULP MAGAZINE INDEX by Leonard A. Robbins published by Starmont House in 1989, (2) THE 2nd PULP MAGAZINE INDEX published in 1989, (3) THE 3rd PULP MAGAZINE INDEX published in 1990, (4) THE 4th PULP MAGAZINE INDEX published in 1991, (5) MYSTERY, DETECTIVE, AND ESPIONAGE FICTION by Michael L. Cook & Stephen T. Miller published in 1988 by Garland, (6) SPIDER by Robert Sampson published by Bowling Green State University, (7) THE SUPER FEDS by Don Hutchison published by Starmont House in 1988, (8) SECRET AGENT X by Tom Johnson & Will Murray published by Robert Weinberg in 1980 as Pulp Classics #22, (9) AMERICA'S SECRET SEVICE ACE; OPERATOR #5 by Wooda Nick Carr published by Robert Weinberg as PULP CLASSIC #7 in 1974, (10) THE AVENGER in short story form published in S & S CLUES supposedly by Kenneth Robeson but actually by Emile Tepperman reprinted in the fanzine PULP by Robert Weinberg from 1976 to 1980, (11) THE PHANTOM DETECTIVE from a letter by Tom Johnson in 1994. In addition he seems to have written stories under 2 pseudonyms, Jordan Cole and Anthony Clemens suggested by Will Murray in Pulp Classics #22 in 1980. Tepperman wrote so many stories under the Anthony Clemens name, it seemed to me that Clemens was someone else. Yet when I checked, practically all of the Clemens stories were in the same magazine as a story by Tepperman.
