In the words of Earl Kemp, "Gnome Press was an American small-press publishing company primarily known for publishing many science fiction classics. The publishers intended to specialize in light space opera and whimsical fantasy but ended up publishing blood-and-thunder fantasy and minor works by major names. The company was originally based in Hicksville, New York, and later moved to New York City.
Gnome Press was the first to publish Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy, which won Asimov a Hugo award in 1966. They brought Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian stories back from pulp obscurity."
This excellent overview of a long-gone but fondly remembered publisher can be found in issue 47 of Earl's excellent online fanzine, eI. You can find his article at this URL:

It includes wonderful pieces of art by Hannes Bok, Edd Cartier, and more.
